The Normandy Chair for Peace strongly believes that peace, environmental and human rights education is the best way to raise awareness about protecting our future. We need to educate our generations to act and to be rationally and emotionally aware citizens, as outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. If we do, the world will work together for a better future for all of us and for the Planet. That is why programmes for schools and universities will be co-created by the Normandy Chair for Peace within this philosophy.
In this line of research we are developing educational materials, such as the “Peace with the Earth Educational Kit” which includes different didactic materials for teaching primary and secondary school students. This kit aims to provide students with inspiring knowledge through audiovisual material, educational games, illustrative books and experiential dynamics.
For example, an inspiring initiative for the CNP’s actions is that of Commandant Cousteau, the University of La Laguna and UNESCO, which has created the first-ever draft Declaration of Human Rights of Future Generations. A project that will cooperate with the Earth Charter at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica.
Thus, this focus on education will contribute to a positive transformation in our minds, but also in our hearts. In the spirit of Tony Oposa, we call for not only the promotion of learning about ‘how to do better’, but also ’empathising with the Earth and each other’ to achieve these goals. As our vision states, we seek to: advance interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. Education (SDG-4) is the key to achieving all the other goals. We invite you to be part of this global movement to achieve Peace on Earth, by being at peace with the Earth. Transformation begins within ourselves.
