Professor David Freestone is the Executive Secretary of the Sargasso Sea Commission. He is also a Professorial Lecturer and Visiting Scholar at George Washington University Law School in Washington D.C. teaching International Climate Change Law. He is the founding Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law (now in its 36th year). From 1996-2008 he worked at the World Bank in Washington DC, first as Chief Counsel of the environment and international law practice group, and then as Deputy General Counsel/Senior Adviser. He is the author/editor of some 30 books and more than 200 academic articles. His books include International Law and Sea Level Rise. (Brill, 2019) with Davor Vidas and Jane McAdam; Conserving Biodiversity in Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (Ed., Brill, 2019); The World Bank and Sustainable Development – Legal Essays (Nijhoff, 2012); Legal Aspects of Carbon Trading: (ed., with Charlotte Streck, OUP 2009). In 2008 he was awarded the Elizabeth Haub Gold Medal for Environmental Law.
