“The future of living in self-reliant neighborhoods with access and agency to critical life support systems of food, water, energy and circular resource flows, presents the best case for humanity to live in balance within nature and not separate from it. Localized regenerative resiliency provides the circumstances for long-term residency in healthy, happy and peaceful communities for generations to come”
James Ehrlich – 2020

James Ehrlich, the founder and innovative thinker that designed “ReGen Villages”, is an American Researcher and Lecturer at Stanford University and entrepreneur in the areas of technology, media technology and clean-tech.

As part of the ecovillage movement, “ReGen Villages” proposes a sustainable solution for housing based on a multi ‘cultural, generational and social’ approach inspired in nature’s logic of interconnectivity. Through an original software, it creates a framework for regenerative resiliency at the neighborhood scale, following the logic of interconnectivity hidden in nature.

James saw that the vulnerability and fragility of our systems, notably big cities, became problematic. Massive disasters such as the BP Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, made him acknowledge the urgent need of awareness: catastrophes like this and Covid-19 itself, make one think of the importance of global health and the need of pursuing a more conscious, logically connected, and healthy life.

Ehrlich’s experience in working with interconnected local farms in California was source of inspiration.

Moved by their sustainable and self-sufficient way of living, and also inspired on the works of Dr. Suzanne 1

W. Simard on mycelial network , Ehrlich conceived a software for modelling human settlements in a resilient and sustainable way. By this, communities could somehow imitate the symbiotic behavior of nature within land-use planning to build meaningful local ecosystems of cooperative farming and living.

But “who wants to leave a big city that has everything?” asked James. His answer: cities have not been delivering on their promises in terms of costs, quality of life, and safety. They’re a very fragile environment. Covid-19 is a wake-up call. It is high time to think on “global health” and connection among all species and nature. Once again, humanity witnesses the urgent need of having Peace with the Earth. It isn’t an anti-city proposal, but an “alternative to face the environmental crisis we’re living”.

By this, “ReGen Villages” contributes transversally to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Surely another inspiring story worth highlighting that fosters sustainable development through alternative solutions to global problems.

Therefore, the NCP pursues to highlight some of its most noteworthy contributions:

Dear Messrs. Espinosa, Contento and Rebamonte:

Greetings from the Normandy Chair for Peace! We write to congratulate and commend you for your quick and effective action to a citizen’s report.

This was regarding concrete structures constructed on the easement zone of the seashore. (Water Code, Sec. 51, the NIPAS Law, and Presidential Proclamations 1234 and 1251). Within less than 24 hours from receipt of the citizen’s report, you took action. This is a rare act of great efficiency among government people. What you did sends a very important message that we must keep our beaches clear and unobstructed. This is an important need to have a place for human connection to the Sea. What you did ensures that the beautiful seashores of Sta. Fe will be free from obstructions for the free passage of the people. Not allowing the construction of human settlements on beaches close to the sea is clear common sense. This is a pure precaution against the fast- rising sea and the increasingly- violent storm surges. (UN Sustainable Development Goal No.13)

We also commend you for the food gardens initiative you have launched in the town of Sta Fe. This sets an excellent example that will guide your people and the rest of the province to address the chronic problem of hunger. (UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 13)

You are indeed a shining exemplar of dedicated public servants worthy of emulation.
We trust that this letter finds you in good health and spirits. And on behalf of your grateful friends – people of shared passions — from around the world, Merci Beaucoup. Daghang Salamat!

An innovative solution for the rights of current and future generations

Image source: “Is Architecture a Social Technology?” – Ref. https://abeerseikaly.com/is-architecture-a-social-technology/

“I have a vision of communities empowered to develop their own well-being and dignity; inspiring practical living spaces in symbiosis with nature.”

Abeer Seikaly, the creative thinker behind the renowned social and environmental project “Weaving a Home”, is a young Palestinian architect from Jordan working on innovative architecture, design, arts and cultural production.

These refugee tents are part of an ongoing project since 2013, designed to provide shelter for displaced communities while protecting the environment. Through his work, Abeer explores how architecture can work as a tool with immediate social impact, providing refugees with housing that includes various amenities for a dignified and modern life.

Inspired by the consequences of the civil war in Syria, Abeer imagined a technological solution that would protect the rights of current and future generations, guaranteeing migrants and their families the right to dignified housing, producing positive transgenerational effects, thereby integrating the interests of future generations by protecting the environment through a sustainable engineering approach.

According to Abeer, nature, tradition and technology are elements that seem to be perpetually linked. Therefore, through a design particularly inspired by nature, “Weaving a Home” employs a specific structural textile made of high-strength plastic tubes, molded in sinusoidal curves that can unfold and close according to various weather conditions, and can also be disassembled, facilitating mobility and transportation. The tents can also collect rainwater, thus ensuring basic sanitary conditions, and absorb solar energy, converting it into electrical energy stored in specific batteries.

Recently, she has also launched a collective program called “Meeting Spaces”, which is a direct evolution of the tent project and is an artistic and collective expression of her vision. Through this, she raises the question of the relevance of cultural heritage in a globalized society, and how we can revive these traditional knowledge systems to innovate and create new material technologies.

An inspiring story that deserves to be highlighted, and that promotes sustainable development through alternative solutions to global problems.

Aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this project not only aims to create an innovative and resilient infrastructure that harnesses renewable energy (addressing SDGs #7 and #9), but also makes a remarkable contribution to other sustainable goals. Therefore, the Normandy Peace Chair identifies in the summary table below the contribution of this project to the 2030 Agenda:
